Presbyopia AcuFocus Corneal Inlay (ACI)
Clinical Trial: Study Uncovers New Treatments To Help Eliminate
the Need For Reading Glasses

rule

The surgeons at InView are investigators for a new FDA clinical trial testing a new experimental technology used in the treatment of presbyopia. The technology is called the AcuFocus Corneal Inlay (ACI) The ACI is an opaque disc with a small aperture in the center, much like that of a camera, where the peripheral rays are obscured while the central rays pass unaffected. This pinhole disc placed in front of the eye, allows them to see at near by reducing the size of the blur circle. The implant is placed under a flap, similar to the one created during LASIK surgery, in the non-dominant eye to increase the depth of focus of the eye by reducing the circle of blur. It has been used to treat up to up to 2.0 diopters of additional magnifying power.

With age, everyone experiences the loss of their near vision. By their mid 40’s, even individuals that have never had to wear glasses in the past will loose the accommodation function of the crystalline lens within their eye, and have to wear reading glasses. This condition, known as presbyopia, has been treated with such treatments as mono-vision LASIK, bi-focal spectacles, reading glasses or mono-vision contact lenses. This new treatment allows those wearing reading glasses new hope for finding new independence from glasses or contacts.

InView will be one of a few test sites for this new procedure beginning in early 2006.
