George O. Waring, III is an ophthalmic surgeon with 25 years of experience in vision correction surgery, RK, LASIK, intraocular lens implants and cataract and corneal surgery. He was born in Buffalo, New York, on February 21, 1941. He received his MD degree from Baylor Medical College, Houston, Texas. His ophthalmology training included a residency followed by a Heed Fellowship in corneal disease and surgery at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth, Britain).

Dr. Waring began his academic career in 1974 at the University of California, Davis. In 1979 he joined the faculty at Emory University, where he has been a tenured Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Refractive Surgery, until 2004, when he entered private practice. In his busy consulting practice in anterior ocular segment diseases and surgery he has done approximately 1000 corneal transplants. He was a Founder and Managing Director of the privately owned practice that changed its name to InView in 2004. In his ten years in private practice, he has done more than 10,000 LASIK and other refractive procedures.

In 1992, he received a National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Scholars Award to do research in laser corneal surgery at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Paris, France. In 1993-94, he served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the El-Maghraby Eye Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where he helped develop LASIK. Dr. Waring is a member of approximately 50 ophthalmological societies, American Ophthalmological Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, International Society of Refractive Surgery, and the International Intraocular Implant Club. He has served on numerous national and international Boards of Directors.

His research has included National Institutes of Health grants to study radial keratotomy (as National Director of the PERK Study) and excimer laser corneal surgery. He has received approximately 60 research grants. As the Principal Investigator of the Emory-sponsored investigations of LASIK, he received the first physician-sponsored investigational device exemption from the U.S. FDA.

Dr. Waring is Editor-in-Chief (since 1990) of The Journal of Refractive Surgery, and has served on 15 other editorial boards, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology. He has published over 250 peer reviewed original articles, 60 book chapters, and 250 brief communications. His authoritative 1300 page textbooks, Refractive Keratotomy for Myopia and Astigmatism, and Corneal Disorders: Diagnosis and Management (with Howard Leibowitz, MD) are standard references.

He has received numerous professional awards including two American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Awards, and its Life Achievement Award (in 2004), the Society of Heed Fellows Outstanding Ophthalmologist Award, an Honorary Medal from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, a Gold Medal from the 5th International Congress on Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Florence, Italy, two gold medals for contributions in international ophthalmology from the Pan Arab Council of Ophthalmology, the Castroviejo Medal from the Corneal Society, and the Lans, Barraquer, Kritzinger and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the International Society of Refractive Surgery.

He has spoken or demonstrated surgery at more than 600 ophthalmic meetings in over 58 countries on six continents. He has given over 30 named lectures at universities and professional societies. He has been active in public communication concerning ophthalmology and has appeared on Nightline with Ted Koppel, the McNeil/Lehrer News Hour, the ABC 20/20 News Show, Good Morning America, ABC Nightly News, and frequently on CNN.

Dr. Waring serves as a Medical Consultant to multiple ophthalmic companies. He serves as an expert witness in medical malpractice cases - for both defendants and plaintiffs.

Dr. Waring enjoys sporting and outdoor activities, often with his four children. He plays squash weekly and is an avid snow skier, including annual heliskiing in the Bugaboo Mountains of British Columbia. As a whitewater kayaker, he has boated the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, the Zambezi River below Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and the Sun Kosi River in the Everest region of Nepal. He has mountain climbed in the Mont Blanc region of France, summited Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, climbed on the Matterhorn in Switzerland and Aconcogua in Argentina, and made a first-ascent of KangYaja (19,925 ft.) in the remote Dolpo region of the Nepali Himalayas (Rock & Ice, March/April, 1996; The American Alpine Journal 1996;38:274-278). He is also a DiveMaster in the Professional Association of Dive Instructors, diving extensively in the Red Sea, in Papua New Guinea, and with the great white sharks in South Africa. Multiple African safaris have been by land, on rivers, by walking, in hot air balloons, in game hunting reserves, and on horseback. Every July he can be found bareboat sailing ---- somewhere. He was elected as a Fellow in the Explorer's Club in New York in March of 2001.
