Surgical Practice
Dr. Waring helped develop Laser Vision Correction Surgery. He initially did laboratory studies to demonstrate the safety of the laser before it was used on people. He presented before the FDA the evidence that led to the first FDA approval for the clinical use of the excimer laser for vision correction. He received the first FDA approval to do LASIK in the United States, as principle investigator of a clinical trial carried out at InView (previously Emory Vision). He has done over 15,000 LASIK procedures. He is a consultant to companies that make excimer lasers.
Dr. Waring has been doing intraocular lens implantations at the time of cataract surgery for the past 30 years. Intraocular lenses are now an important part of vision correction surgery.
Dr. Waring implants phakic intraocular lenses for individuals who have very high amounts of near-sightedness and are not good candidates for laser vision correction. He uses the AMO Verisyse style and the Staar ICL style, with excellent success.
For individuals over age 50 who have lost their near reading vision, Dr. Waring can do refractive lens exchange, removing the natural lens which no longer serves its "auto focus" near vision function and replacing it with the CrystaLens (an accommodating intraocular lens) or a ReZoom or ReStore multi-focal intraocular lens. These lenses allow good vision at distance, intermediate computer, and near reading.
Cataract surgery continues to be an active part of his practice, and many patients prefer the CrystaLens, ReZoom or ReStore lens to decrease dependency on reading glasses after their cataract surgery.
The intraocular lens surgeries are scheduled at InView and performed at the Atlanta Eye Surgery Center near I-75 and Howell Mill Road in Atlanta.
