First Tetraflex™ Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implant Procedure To Be Performed November 15

Next Generation Accommodating IOL Implant for Baby Boomers with Cataracts/Presbyopia Designed for Clear Vision at all Distances

Atlanta, Georgia – November 2, 2007 - The first Tetraflex Intraocular lens implant procedure performed in Georgia will take place on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at the NovaMed Surgery Center, in Atlanta.  The procedure is in the final phase of a FDA clinical trial for the new Tetraflex vision correction technology initiated by Lenstec, (St. Petersburg, FL). The clinical trial is the first in the US to test this next generation IOL vision correction technology designed to treat patients with cataracts who also have presbyopia, or the age related loss of near vision.

Already in widespread use throughout Europe, the Teraflex lens is a new generation intraocular lens implant designed to provide permanent clear reading, intermediate and distance vision for patients with cataracts and presbyopia.  It is intended to replace the patient’s aging natural lens with an implant that has been designed to restore more youthful clarity and zooming power, while potentially eliminating or greatly reducing the need for reading glasses.

The procedure will be performed by George Waring, M.D., of InView, in Atlanta, one of the leading research-based vision correction centers in the Southeast.  InView is one of just thirteen vision centers nationwide selected to participate in the clinical study conducted under the auspices of FDA regulations.  In addition to being an investigator for the Tetraflex clinical trial, Dr. Waring has been performing IOL implant procedures for over 34 years in Europe and the United States.

“The Tetraflex lens is an exciting breakthrough technology which is the first technology that offers patients the potential opportunity to restore their eyes natural zooming power that most closely replicates the eye’s natural lens,” said Dr. Waring.  “The early international study results have shown promising results and an advancement over IOL implants currently available today.”

The Tetraflex lens was developed to simulate the ability of the eye’s natural lens back and forth movement to accommodate for near and far vision.  This has the potential to be a significant improvement over the earlier generation IOLs that attempt to restore near vision by diverting incoming light in a multi focal format, rather than focusing a single point of light at various distances.    The Tetraflex lens movement is designed to allow the lens to focus on a single point of light and zoom in and out to see clear at all distances.

The Tetraflex lens implant procedure is similar to the standard intraocular lens insertion procedure during cataract surgery.   The lens is made of 100% biocompatible material, and is inserted into the eye through a 3-mm or smaller clear corneal incision.  It is designed to be readily removed and exchanged through the same incision.
