FDA Clinical Trial at InView Studies Reversible Treatment for Aging Eyes
ATLANTA, February 14, 2006 - The first AcuFocus vision correction procedure in the Southeast will take place at InView, Atlanta’s research-based leader in vision correction surgery, on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, as a part of a new FDA clinical trial testing the latest technology used in the treatment of presbyopia. The technology, formally known as AcuFocus Corneal Inlay (ACI), offers a new treatment for patients with aging eyes who are wearing reading glasses to restore their near vision.
Since 1993, InView surgeons Keith Thompson, M.D., and George Waring, M.D., have brought vision surgery patients many “firsts.” “The AcuFocus treatment complements our existing treatment options to offer patients the latest and most comprehensive treatments in surgical vision correction,” said Dr. Waring.
How It Works
The ACI is an opaque disc with a small aperture in the center, much like that of a camera, where the peripheral rays are obscured while the central rays pass unaffected. This pinhole disc placed in front of the eye, allows patients to see at near distances by reducing the size of the blur circle, which is expanded as the eye ages and the natural lens loses its ability to accommodate. The ACI implant is placed under a flap, similar to the flap created during LASIK surgery, in the non-dominant eye to increase the depth of focus of the eye by reducing the circle of blur. It has been used to treat up to 2.0 diopters of additional magnifying power.
The Newest Advances in Vision Surgery For Baby Boomers
Dr. Waring, national chief investigator for the clinical trial, added, “The new AcuFocus treatment provides the opportunity for patients to participate in a study with the latest treatment available for the condition known as presbyopia, which effects everyone in their mid to late forties. We are pleased to be the first center in the Southeast to offer this advanced treatment for patients who now wear reading glasses.”
With age, everyone experiences the loss of their near vision. By the mid 40’s to mid 50’s, even individuals who have never had to wear glasses in the past will lose the accommodation function of the crystalline lens within their eyes and have to wear reading glasses. This condition, known as presbyopia, has been treated with such treatments as reading glasses or mono-vision contact lenses. The new AcuFocus treatment gives those wearing reading glasses new hope for finding new independence from glasses or contacts.
